Total: 31 hours
Week 3: February 13-February 15 (15 hours)

This week marks the very fist week of my internship! I had a lot of information given to me, which was expected. On my first day, I got a tour of the office and got to see the room where I would be set up and working every shift. I also got to tour the hospital and see some of the places I would have to go during my internship. I then sat in on my first morning huddle. Morning huddles occur everyday at 8:45 a.m and include the community relations, marketing, and print shop departments. The idea is for everyone to go around the room and say if they have anything to share or give "kudos" to someone. It was a nice orientation for me to see how the huddles work since I will be included in them twice a week. Following the huddle, I had to complete multiple forms and online courses that all new employees are required to do. The courses were basic rules and principles that employees at the hospital must comply to. I also got lunch in the hospital employee cafeteria with the whole team on my first day and got to really know them. Tuesday and Wednesday followed with even more employee orientation. I logged onto the computer with all my new employee information and was shown the drives that I would be working in. I also got my badge! The badge allowed me to sign on my computer and access certain areas of the building. On Tuesday, I sat in on a detailed meeting with Laren, the Marketing Manager and Rhonda, the Executive Assistant. We picked out and decided what PRMC products to sell at different hospital events. I also had a one-on-one meeting with Roger, the Director of Community Relations and my internship supervisor, and received information on National Hospital Week. National Hospital Week honors employees who have worked 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 60+ years at PRMC. A major project I will be working on throughout my internship is writing bios for employees that are going to be honored. The bios will be published in an edition of LifeWorks at PRMC. I ended off the week by getting to sit in on an important meeting with Laren, Rhonda, and Gwenn, Community Relations and Marketing Specialist. The meeting was with Pam Woods, a woman who specializes in direct email marketing. She talked to us about the email-marketing site called Constant Contact and how to increase its mailing list. It was an intriguing meeting to sit in on, especially because I was learning about direct email marketing in my classes at the time and will be working with Constant Contact at my internship. It was a busy first week but I learned a lot and was excited to see where this internship would take me.

Week two began with even more information given to me and it was all very exciting. On Monday, I finally got my email set up and learned about all aspects of Constant Contact. I learned how to navigate through the website and send out email campaigns. After giving it a try and getting used to it, I got to send out my first monthly newsletter the next day to Peninsula Partner members! Peninsula Partners is a program at Peninsula Regional Hospital targeted to individuals ages 55 and up and provides information, services, and special events that allow members to enhance their health. I sent out the first of many newsletters I would be creating for the Peninsula Partners program. I was also busy on Monday with small projects such as making goodie bags for winners of an employee bowling tournament and stenciling the department carts to say "Community Relations." Another tasks of mine throughout the day was to scan pictures of a retired PRMC employee who passed away. I scanned the pictures from old PRMC yearbooks. On Tuesday, I was put to work right away with phone calls. I was assigned to call every person who signed up to attend the Healthy Heart Presentation tomorrow for Peninsula Partners and reminded them of the event, time, and location. At the end of the week, I filed and organized Wagner Wellness Van forms for all of 2016. The Wager Wellness Van is a mobile clinic that gives health screenings or educates the public on healthcare. I had to record how many people were seen by the van each month and how many total for the whole 2016 year. I also ended the week by scanning and filing PRMC media clippings. Media clippings consist of any content in newspapers when PRMC is mentioned. I completed the rest of the 2016 media clippings starting in October and then began in January 2017. The clippings had to be scanned, logged on computer database, and then filed away in cabinets. I concluded the week by attending the Healthy Heart Presentation for Peninsula Partners to help set up and greet members at the event.

By week three, I had really gotten into the swing of things. It was helpful to attend morning huddles because I could find out what important events where happening throughout the week and people could give me assignments. I started off the week by collecting PRMC koozies from the storage closet. I put together 100 koozies in a bag for a partner of Peninsula Regional Medical Center who wanted promotional products to hand out at their golf fundraiser. One of my bigger projects throughout the week was to work on the email bounce list for Constant Contact. I went through almost 50 active members whose emails kept bouncing. I looked up each person individually through the Peninsula Partner database, got their addresses, and sent them a form to update their information. It was a long process to search each member and see if they were inactive or active. Another project I had was to make an excel sheet of the 2017 Cafe Display Case schedule, which the Community Relations department is in charge of. They frequently change the theme of the display case, so I labeled each month and its topic to be displayed. For the rest of the week, I worked on another Constant Contact newsletter for February and even started on the one for March. There are a lot of events that occur within Peninsula Partners so it is important to get the information out there ahead of time.
